China Might Impound EU Planes Over CO2 Dispute

According to Reuters, “China will take swift counter-measures that could include impounding European aircraft if the EU punishes Chinese airlines for not complying with its scheme to curb carbon emissions, the China Air Transport Association said on Tuesday.”

In dispute is China’s non-compliance with an EU ultimatum for China to report carbon emissions data by March 31st, a deadline which has come and gone without action on China’s part.

According to the EU Climate Commissioner, Connie Hedegaard, China is now subject to EU “enforcement actions” which could include fines on Chinese airlines, or the impounding of aircraft.

“Chinese airlines are unanimous on this. We won’t provide the data,” said Wei Zhenzhong, secretary general of the China Air Transport Association. Wei made it clear that if action was taken against Chinese airlines, then “The government will take at least the same kind of measures, and these anti-sanction moves will be lasting.”

While the Carbon Belch team thinks there’s a lot about China not to like, at least they are standing up to the demands of wacky EU climate extremists. You can read more on this Reuters article here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/12/us-iata-china-emissions-idUSBRE85B09W20120612
