Your Tax Dollars Promoting “Meatless Monday” at the USDA – Linking Ranching to Climate Change

That’s right, the very branch of the federal government that is supposed to promote and support agriculture, farmers and ranchers is encouraging employees in its online newsletter to participate in “Meatless Monday”, therefore helping to mitigate the damage to the earth caused by climate change.
The USDA’s recent newsletter stated, “One simple way to reduce your environmental impact while dining at our cafeterias is to participate in the “Meatless Monday” initiative. This international effort, as the name implies, encourages people not to eat meat on Mondays. How will going meatless one day of the week help the environment? The production of meat, especially beef (and dairy as well), has a large environmental impact. According to the U.N., animal agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gases and climate change. It also wastes resources.”
As you might imagine, not everyone is excited with the USDA’s new carbon footprint guilt complex. In addition to complaints by the cattlemen’s association, Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas shared his concern by stating, “Never in my life would I have expected USDA to be opposed to farmers and ranchers. American farmers and ranchers deserve a USDA that will pursue supportive policies rather than seek their further harm. With extreme drought conditions plaguing much of the United States, the USDA should be more concerned about helping drought-stricken producers rather than demonizing an industry reeling from the lack of rain.”
The Carbon Belch Team has decided to drop the “less” from the USDA’s new Big Brother directive. Our staff will now observe “Meat Mondays” and “Chick-Fil-A Wednesdays”. Let’s stop bashing the food industry – there’s only five days left in the week for us to eat what we want!
